It was the 80's, and in between doing a lot of coke and voting for Ronald Reagan, we got this lame little show that, amazingly, survived long enough to get really, really good, despite the bulk of it's first two seasons being a Piece Of...Something. Here we went from some old show and the handful of movies spun off from it to an honest-to-God franchise. The Next Generation proved that this was not just a fluke of an idea, though at this point were worried that we'd just keep moving forward with each new series until the final, inevitable end of "Star Trek: The Next, Next, Next, REEEALLY Next Generation".
